Principal Engineer – MVDC Circuit Breaker

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading global technology organisation for a Principal Engineer – MVDC Circuit Breaker to lead the development of innovative medium-voltage and MVDC protection technologies for next-generation power systems.

This is a highly technical role combining circuit breaker design, high-voltage testing, research and technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate and test MV circuit breakers, including vacuum, solid-state and hybrid technologies.

  • Develop innovative ultra-fast MVDC circuit breakers and protection solutions.

  • Design and optimise Thomson coil actuators for performance and reliability.

  • Establish MV/MVDC test circuits, develop prototypes and conduct high-voltage laboratory testing.

  • Lead research collaborations with European universities and research institutions.

  • Contribute to patents, technical publications and the development of new protection technologies.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant IEC and IEEE standards.

Key Requirements

  • 5+ years’ hands-on experience in MV/HVDC protection, circuit breaker design, fault analysis and interruption technologies.

  • Strong knowledge of hybrid circuit breakers, ultra-fast protection, MVDC breakers and innovative interrupter technologies.

  • Experience with DER integration, including PV and BESS, and advanced fault detection is desirable.

  • Strong electromagnetic and thermal modelling experience for high-power applications.

  • Proven experience in MV breaker development, technical innovation and leadership.

  • Experience with real-time simulation or FPGA-based control systems.

  • Experience with vacuum or gaseous circuit breakers is advantageous.

  • Strong research background, with publications or collaboration with research institutions in MV protection technologies.
