Field Application Engineer – Advanced Power Electronics

Location: California, USA – Remote

Senior Technical Opportunity – Power Electronics & Semiconductor Technology

We're supporting a leading technology organisation in the appointment of an experienced Field Application Engineer to support customers across the US West Coast.

This is a technically focused role for an engineer with strong experience in power electronics and semiconductor-based power conversion, who can work closely with customers from early technical engagement through product development, qualification and volume production.

You'll act as an important link between customer engineering teams and internal technical, product and commercial functions, helping customers get the best performance from advanced power semiconductor technologies while identifying opportunities for broader adoption.

The role offers significant exposure to major technology programmes across automotive, industrial and emerging high-performance computing applications.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will combine strong technical knowledge with the ability to understand customer requirements at a system and application level.

You'll work with engineering teams to support device and module selection, system optimisation, design validation and technical problem solving. At the same time, you'll help identify opportunities where advanced power semiconductor technologies can deliver improvements in efficiency, power density, reliability and overall system performance.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys being close to both the technology and the customer and who can confidently operate between detailed engineering discussions and broader programme-level conversations.

Key Responsibilities

Customer & Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a senior technical point of contact for key customers and their engineering teams.

  • Support customers throughout the design, development, qualification and production lifecycle.

  • Lead technical discussions, design reviews, workshops and application assessments.

  • Develop a strong understanding of customer architectures, technical challenges and future requirements.

  • Work proactively with customers to identify opportunities for improving system performance and efficiency.

Power Electronics & System Applications

  • Provide technical guidance on the application of advanced power semiconductor devices and modules.

  • Support high-voltage power conversion applications and associated system architectures.

  • Advise on switching behaviour, thermal performance, efficiency and power-density considerations.

  • Support customers with gate-drive, layout, electromagnetic compatibility and system optimisation challenges.

  • Help engineering teams maximise the benefits of advanced semiconductor technologies at system level.

Product Development & Qualification

  • Work with customers during product evaluation, design-in and qualification activities.

  • Support technical validation and investigate application-related performance issues.

  • Participate in failure analysis and root-cause investigations where required.

  • Provide customer feedback to internal engineering and product teams.

  • Contribute application knowledge and market insight to future product development.

Market & Platform Development

  • Identify opportunities to expand the adoption of advanced power technologies across customer platforms.

  • Develop relationships with engineering organisations and influence future design decisions.

  • Monitor developments in power conversion technology and changing customer requirements.

  • Help identify emerging applications where improvements in efficiency, switching performance or power density can create significant value.

  • Support growth across areas including electrified transportation, industrial power and high-performance computing infrastructure.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with product engineering, applications, quality, reliability, operations and commercial teams.

  • Coordinate technical activities across multiple regions and customer programmes.

  • Help manage technical escalations and ensure issues are progressed effectively.

  • Communicate customer requirements and application trends to internal stakeholders.

  • Support alignment between customer development programmes and internal product strategies.

Customer & Industry Engagement

  • Develop long-term technical relationships with key customer engineering teams.

  • Support customer presentations, technical reviews and senior-level engagements.

  • Represent the organisation at relevant industry events and technical forums.

  • Travel domestically and internationally when required to support important customer programmes.

About You

We're looking for an experienced power electronics engineer or Field Application Engineer who understands how semiconductor technologies translate into real-world power conversion systems.

You'll likely bring:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • At least 5 years' experience in power electronics, semiconductor applications, FAE or power system design.

  • Strong understanding of power semiconductor devices and their practical application.

  • Experience with high-voltage power conversion systems.

  • Good knowledge of switching performance, thermal management and system efficiency.

  • Experience working directly with customer engineering teams.

  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • The ability to work effectively across engineering, commercial and operational teams.

Experience That Would Be Particularly Valuable

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly advantageous:

  • Silicon carbide or other wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies

  • Power semiconductor devices and modules

  • High-voltage power conversion

  • Electric vehicle power systems

  • Industrial power electronics

  • Energy conversion and storage

  • High-efficiency power supplies

  • Data-centre or high-performance computing infrastructure

  • Motor drives

  • Renewable energy systems

  • Power architecture and system optimisation

  • Semiconductor qualification and reliability

  • High-volume product introduction

Experience supporting complex customer programmes from initial design activity through to production would be particularly valuable.

The Person

We're looking for someone who can combine technical depth with commercial awareness.

You'll be:

  • Technically credible – able to earn the confidence of experienced customer engineers.

  • System focused – comfortable understanding the wider application rather than looking only at individual components.

  • Customer oriented – capable of developing trusted, long-term engineering relationships.

  • Commercially aware – able to recognise opportunities and understand how technical decisions influence business outcomes.

  • Collaborative – comfortable coordinating activity across engineering, product and commercial teams.

  • Proactive – able to identify potential problems and opportunities before they become obvious.

  • Adaptable – comfortable operating within fast-moving technology programmes involving multiple stakeholders and geographies.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of advanced power electronics and support technologies that are becoming increasingly important across transportation, industrial systems and next-generation computing infrastructure.

You'll have the opportunity to influence significant customer programmes, work alongside highly experienced technical teams and play a key role in bringing advanced semiconductor technologies into demanding real-world applications.

For an experienced Field Application Engineer, Power Electronics Engineer or Applications Engineer looking to take on a high-impact customer-facing technical role, this represents an excellent opportunity to combine engineering expertise, customer engagement and technology development.
