IT Manager – Data Centres

Job Summary

The IT Manager – Data Centres is responsible for the operation, reliability, security, and performance of data centre infrastructure and services. This role oversees servers, storage, networking, virtualization, and data centre operations while ensuring high availability, compliance, and alignment with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Data Centre Operations

  • Manage day-to-day operations of data centre infrastructure (on-premises and/or colocation).

  • Ensure high availability, performance, and scalability of systems and services.

  • Oversee capacity planning, asset management, and lifecycle management of hardware.

  • Coordinate maintenance, upgrades, and incident response activities.

Infrastructure & Systems Management

  • Manage servers (physical and virtual), storage systems, backup, and disaster recovery solutions.

  • Oversee network infrastructure in coordination with network teams (LAN/WAN, firewalls, load balancers).

  • Manage virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) and/or private cloud environments.

  • Ensure effective monitoring, patching, and configuration management.

Security, Risk & Compliance

  • Implement and enforce data centre security policies and access controls.

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO 27001, SOC, PCI-DSS where applicable).

  • Manage disaster recovery and business continuity planning and testing.

  • Address risks related to availability, performance, and data protection.

Vendor & Budget Management

  • Manage relationships with hardware, software, and colocation vendors.

  • Negotiate contracts, SLAs, and service agreements.

  • Develop and manage data centre budgets, forecasting CapEx and OpEx.

  • Ensure cost efficiency and optimization of infrastructure investments.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead and mentor data centre and infrastructure teams.

  • Coordinate with application, cloud, security, and business teams.

  • Provide technical guidance and escalation support.

  • Communicate system status, risks, and improvements to senior management.

Documentation & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain accurate documentation for infrastructure, processes, and procedures.

  • Drive automation, standardization, and best practices.

  • Identify opportunities for modernization, consolidation, or cloud integration.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 5–10 years of experience in IT infrastructure or data centre operations.

  • Proven experience managing enterprise data centre environments.

  • Strong knowledge of servers, storage, networking, virtualization, and backup systems.

  • Experience with monitoring, incident management, and change management processes.

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • Certifications such as ITIL, VMware (VCP), Microsoft, Cisco (CCNA/CCNP), or equivalent.

  • Experience with hybrid cloud or private cloud environments.

  • Knowledge of automation tools and scripting (PowerShell, Bash, etc.).

  • Familiarity with data centre facilities (power, cooling, racks, cabling).
