Process Safety Engineering Lead

Location: North Sweden
Long Contract - initial 12 months, very likely to extend

We’re seeking a Process Safety Engineering Lead to take full ownership of process safety across a large-scale industrial development. In this role, you’ll ensure that safety isn’t an afterthought or a checklist item, but a thread woven through every design choice, technical decision, and delivery milestone.

You’ll sit at the intersection of engineering, construction, and operations, guiding teams to make sound, risk-aware decisions from early concept through to commissioning and handover.

What you’ll be doing

End-to-End Safety Leadership
You’ll be accountable for process safety across the project, setting direction, priorities, and expectations to ensure consistent and effective implementation.

Risk Assessment & Implementation
You’ll lead structured risk reviews such as HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA, ensuring that findings don’t just live in reports but translate into real design and operational improvements.

Design Review & Challenge
You’ll critically assess engineering solutions, identifying risks, questioning assumptions, and helping teams arrive at safer, more robust outcomes.

Regulatory Integration
You’ll define how applicable Swedish and European safety requirements are interpreted and embedded into the project, ensuring clarity and consistency.

Authority & Stakeholder Engagement
You’ll work directly with regulators and internal stakeholders on safety, compliance, and permitting matters, acting as a trusted technical counterpart.

Structure & Governance
You’ll establish clear ways of tracking risks, monitoring actions, and demonstrating compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

Subject Matter Leadership
You’ll be the central point of expertise for process safety, supporting both the technical depth and the practical execution of safety work across teams.

Transition to Operations
As the project progresses, you’ll help prepare the transition of safety ownership from project delivery into operations, ensuring continuity and readiness ahead of start-up.

What we’re looking for

  • Extensive experience within steel manufacturing or comparable heavy industrial environments
  • Strong working knowledge of Swedish safety legislation and its application in large projects
  • Proven background in process safety within industrial project delivery or operating assets
  • Hands-on experience leading or facilitating HAZOPs, risk assessments, or similar studies
  • Confidence in reviewing and challenging technical solutions, with sound engineering judgement
  • Ability to influence across disciplines and drive action on safety-critical topics
  • Comfortable taking ownership of key safety decisions while collaborating closely with diverse teams

Why this role stands out

This is a leadership role with real weight. You won’t just advise on safety, you’ll shape how it’s delivered, how it’s embedded, and how it carries through into operations. Think of it as designing the project’s “safety spine”, strong, flexible, and impossible to ignore.

You work close to engineering teams, contractors, and suppliers to ensure safety is part of
decisions from early design through execution. You combine technical judgement with the
ability to align people and drive the work forward.
You’ll be working as the process safety expert for this part of the project delivery team. The
aim is to provide support to the organization and prepare the handover from the project
delivery part of safety process to the operational team as we get closer to the start of
production of our steel mill.
You will:
· Lead and be accountable for process safety across the project
· Drive HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and other risk assessments, and ensure outcomes are implemented
· Review and challenge engineering design from a safety perspective
· Define how we apply Swedish and European safety requirements in the project
· Work directly with authorities and internal stakeholders on safety and permitting
topics
· Build structure for follow-up, risk tracking, and compliance
· Act as the go-to person for process safety, both technically and in how the work is carried out
What you’ll bring
· Long experience from the steel industry or similar heavy industry
· Solid understanding of Swedish safety legislation and how it is applied in projects
· Several years of hands-on experience in process safety work in industrial projects or operations
· Experience leading or facilitating HAZOP, risk assessments or similar
· Ability to challenge technical solutions and make clear, grounded decisions
· Ability to work across teams and get others to act on safety requirements
You are comfortable taking responsibility for safety decisions, while working closely with others to make them happen
