Photonics Design Expert

We are recruiting on behalf of our client, a leading international technology business specialising in advanced silicon photonics, for a Photonics Design Expert to join its R&D team.

This is a senior technical role focused on the development of next-generation silicon photonics solutions for optical communications. You will lead new technology concepts and product development projects, from early-stage R&D through to new product introduction, while helping shape the future direction of silicon photonics technology.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor developments in optical communications and identify opportunities to strengthen silicon photonics technology for short-reach optical interconnects and coherent optical communications.

• Lead new concept studies and product development projects from R&D through to new product introduction and volume production.

• Define complex silicon photonics chip architectures and drive best-in-class performance across active and passive components.

• Lead optoelectronic co-design activities covering modulators, detectors, drivers and TIAs.

• Optimise complete optoelectronic systems using 2.5D/3D advanced packaging, with a focus on high-speed signal integrity.

• Work closely with photonic engineers and product designers to develop silicon photonics devices and products.

• Collaborate with solution, process and packaging teams to ensure successful implementation of architectures and key technologies.

• Support product strategy, yield improvement and the identification of new business opportunities.

• Analyse technology and market trends to identify key future directions in silicon photonics.

• Lead and support projects that bring new photonic components and systems into volume production.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

• An in-depth understanding of integrated optics and optoelectronic components.

• A PhD or equivalent in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field, with 5+ years' experience in the photonics industry.

• Proven experience designing and testing silicon photonics, with successful product development experience.

• Strong knowledge of integrating PICs with EICs, RF ICs and driver circuitry within transceiver modules or equivalent systems.

• A deep understanding of silicon photonics technology trends and the ability to identify emerging technology opportunities.

• Experience with high-density optoelectronic integration, 2.5D/3D advanced packaging and optoelectronic chip co-design is highly desirable.

• Proven project and product management experience, ideally taking components or systems through to volume production.

• Experience communicating with stakeholders and securing internal support and funding for new R&D initiatives.

• An understanding of market and business landscapes, with strong commercial awareness.

• Hands-on experience with photonics modelling tools.

• Experience with Luceda IPKISS, Python and VPI would be advantageous.

• Excellent written and spoken English.
